This is an install of GDAM dj-mixing software for Mac OS 10.1 It should also install and run under 10.2, although it has not been fully tested and might be less stable.
GDAM is a unix-style application, and currently requires that users run an X-server to display GDAM's graphical interface.
This install comprises the GDAM software and the full set of unix open-source libraries and software which GDAM uses. The libraries were built and packaged using the fink distribution (fink.sourceforge.net) Full source code is available online for all programs and libraries.
GDAM will install to /gsw/ Any existing fink installation in /sw should be left intact.
The installer can be found on the web: http://herbie.ddv.com/~geoff/gdam-osx-0.943-9.dmg Control-click on the link and select "download to disk".
If you are already using fink, and want to compile gdam yourself, copy the fink info file from http://herbie.ddv.com/~geoff/gdam-0.943-6.info to /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/finkinfo/sound/ and invoke "fink rebuild gdam; fink install gdam" Note that aiff support is currently broken with this method.
GDAM is distributed inside a disk image. Double-click the .dmg file to mount the disk image. Find the new drive icon on the desktop, and open. Double-click the package inside to install.
The installer is customizeable and there are two options:
X SERVER
GDAM currently requires an x-windows server to run. If you do not have an x server installed (i.e. XDarwin, teton's XTools, etc.) you might want to try the free XDarwin server included.
There are two available interfaces. XDarwin will run full-screen, with the simple Blackbox windor manager. OroborOSX wraps a modified XDarwin server, and offers nearly complete integration with the OS X desktop. running X fullscreen via OroborOSX exposes bugs such as disappearing mouse cursors, and may also cause performance problems and audio dropouts.
GDAM
Everyone wants to install GDAM. If an existing GDAM install is detected in /gsw, it will be deleted.
To start XDarwin, double-click the XDarwin app in the gdam.app/ directory. When asked, select "run in full screen mode" and "don't ask me again." X will start in full-screen mode. Use command-option-a to switch between the x server and the macintosh desktop. If XDarwin fails to start, try double-clicking gdam.app/run_x11.command
To run OroborOSX, double-click the OroborOSX app in gdam.app/
NOTE: if you have an OroborOSX icon in the dock from an earlier gdam install, drag it into the trash. To replace, drag OroborOSX from gdam.app/ onto the taskbar, and a new icon will be added.
With either XDarwin or OroborOSX, gdam will start automatically once the X server is running. To restart gdam under OroborOSX, look under the launch menu. 'gdam' will restart gdam as a normal user, 'sugdam' will restart gdam as root. Running the server as root may improve performance, but might cause system lockup. To restart gdam under XDarwin + Blackbox, option-click on the Blackbox desktop and select 'gdam' or 'sugdam' from the pop-up menu. Whenever gdam is run, it will stop any currently running gdam processes. If run as root, it may ask for an administrator password.
add all your mp3 / wav / aiff / ogg files to GDAM'S song database so that tempos and index points can be stored between sessions.
open the song selector, click 'build database', enter the root directory which holds your mp3 collection (i.e. ~/My Mp3 Files/) and click 'run find..' To add a new album, you can give the album for the starting path (i.e. ~/My Mp3 Files/The Superfriends/Super Hits/)
be sure to save your song database, ~/.gdam/song.database is the recommended location.

5 aug - fixed beatcalc bug, select microphone in server config file
10 jul - microphone input
6 jun - working midi control, including interactive "learning" of new bindings. repeat all/one. new 'djrewind' filter.
29 apr - new features and filters slated for next linux release, greatly reduced file size. (80MB download, 250MB installed)
10 feb - improved handling of irregular path names.
15 jan - aiff support, help files now included, uses standard OS X installer.
2001:
nov 7 - fully relocatable! re-run install.command after moving gdam.app/ to a new location. New versions of XDarwin and OroborOSX. XDarwin should start with a double-click for everyone.
nov 5 - fixed typo which prevented XDarwin from running even with run_x11.command helper script.
nov 3 - now include OroborOSX, which wraps XDarwin and provides and provides an interface fully integrated into the OSX desktop. user has choice of full-screen (pure XDarwin plus Blackbox) or integrated (OroborOSX) interface at start-up. GDAM starts automatically with either method.
oct 20 - fixed default database builder options, workaround for gtk bug which prevented seek-by-beat from working.
fink - used to build a localized distribution of open-source software, and to build gdam into that distribution. see fink.sourceforge.net/
xdarwin - an x server for OSX sourceforge.net/projects/xonx/
oroborosx - aqua-styled window manager and xserver integration package http://julia.et.ic.ac.uk/adrian/software/oroborosx/
